We all know that by taking one look at a person's facebook profile can tell us a lot, perhaps too much, about their lives- relationship status, hair color, favorite movie, bra color? Women are now taking the fight against breast cancer to a new and extraordinary level by simply stating the color of the bra they are wearing on their facebook statuses. It is causing some controversy, but as the old saying goes, there is no such thing as bad press.
According to the Washington Post, a message was sent to women all across the globe promoting this event. The message read "Some fun is going on . . . just write the color of your bra in your status. Just the color, nothing else. It will be neat to see if this will spread the wings of breast cancer awareness. It will be fun to see how long it takes before people wonder why all the girls have a color in their status Haha."
As the mysterious single word statuses multiplied across facebook, many curious people went right to Google to determine the meaning. What was the reaction of many people? Anger. Groups such as "Awareness For Breast Cancer is not about the COLOR of your BRA!" and "I Kept My Bra Color To Myself - And I Still Support Breast Cancer!" have shown up all across facebook and naysayers continue to oppose this silly little movement.
A silly movement is exactly what this is. Breast cancer is a serious disease that strikes many women all over the world every day. BUT-Anything that attracts attention to the right against breast cancer is OK in my book. It is upsetting that so many people have taken a great and fun movement, though "silly," and turned it into a moral debate. While a woman's bra color may be a little personal, it isn't as if they are posting pictures! Come on, people!
"Many survivors were upset by the now infamous bra color postings of earlier this week. I was not, and I AM a survivor. It was stupid, but I did participate. Why? Because it got people talking about breast cancer. How did bra color relate to breast cancer? It didn't, but it got us talking. So, in a way it worked," said Marcia Hahnfeld Deitrick, a breast cancer survivor.
So why not post the color of your bra on your status? It doesn't hurt anything. It is just increasing awareness for a noble cause. So, with pride and hope, I say PINK!
